Complete vaccination with the four-component, protein-based meningococcal serogroup B vaccine (4CMenB) is effective in preventing invasive meningococcal disease in children under five years of age. According to a study published in the 2nd issue, New England Journal of Medicine.
Jesús Castilla, MD, Ph.D., Instituto de Salud Pública de Navarra, Pamplona, Spain, and colleagues investigated the efficacy of 4CMenB in prevention. Invasive meningococcal disease Children in a nationally matched case-control study. All laboratory-confirmed cases of invasive meningococcal disease in children <60 months of age between 5 October 2015 and 6 October 2019 have been identified. 306 cases (79.4% of serogroup B disease) matched her 1,224 controls.
The researchers found that 11.4% and 24.3% of case-patients and controls, respectively, received at least one dose of 4CMenB. Efficacy against invasive meningococcal disease caused by any serogroup was 76% with full vaccination (receiving at least two doses) and 54% with partial vaccination. Efficacy against meningococcal serogroup B disease was 71% with complete vaccination. Vaccine efficacy with at least one dose of 4CMenB was 64 and 82% against serogroup B and non-serogroup B disease, respectively. Forty-four patients had serogroup B strains expected to be covered by 4CMenB. None of these patients had been vaccinated.
“This evidence may help in deciding whether to include this vaccine in immunization programs in countries where invasive meningococcal disease is endemic. child There is a problem and its prevention is a priority,” the authors wrote.
